“Out Of Reach”

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Out of Reach.”

Write about the one X that got away — a person, an experience, a place you wanted to visit. How much would you change about your life to have it within reach again?

For several years, I dreamed of seeing her. When the opportunity arrived for me to ask if I could visit her. I listened attentively to the word “no,” resonated in my ears in disbelief. I stood stunned knowing she slipped from me like water pouring over my hands.

Prior to this day of horror, I spent months reading my “Boy’s Life” magazine, praying, hoping and imagining the opportunity to experience Philmont in person. I was devastated, and I know this was the first traumatic event of my young life.

Since that day of my youthful nightmare, when the opportunity to attend the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch was taken away,

I have since spent my years camping, hiking and backpacking every chance to distance myself from the lost opportunity that in my youth was “Out of Reached.”
