Around the world, within every society and culture, nature’s natural beauty in the wooded forest, jungles, deserts, and seashores are landscape destinations for holding someone’s hand, sharing a sunrise or sunset, and infusing love between two people.

In the Spring of 1979, I fell in love with Katherine, surrounded by nature, absorbing nature’s beauty.
Our love blossomed for one another like sprouting flowers from the ground.
We hiked and backpacked trails, absorbing nature’s visual beauty of sounds and silences, feeling the winds against our skin, to see it moving tree limbs and rustling leaves, with insects circling, buzzing, and humming, surrounded by assorted feathered birds soaring above wildlife seen and unseen.

A married couple followed by the family we became, of days, weeks, months, and years. With our children, we shared of love of nature.
Now we mourn.
As a widower, we increased our time in nature, sharing thoughts reflecting upon our sorrows in the forested wilderness, day-hiking after school, with overnight weekend backpacking, spring breaks camping at the beach, along with boy and girl scout weekends and summer camps, Katherine’s spirit is there among our family.

Fifteen years have passed, and our healing continues with our youngest, Erica graduating from college.
I’m still a widower, now an empty nester, dreaming of nomadic travels roaming our planet, searching for tranquil moments surrounded by nature.

Excerpt from my fictional short story.
